Currently, we can find three types of face masks on the market: hygienic, surgical masks and filtering masks (FFP1, FFP2, FFP3).

The main difference is the level of protection they provide. Surgical masks are the most commonly used in hospital environments or in other healthcare procedures. They offer a higher level of protection than hygienic masks. Hygienic masks typically thought of as “barrier masks” and provide a lower level of protection.

Las mascarillas autofiltrantes FFP2, protegen al usuario y protegen al resto de personas. Ofrecen protección frente a contaminantes ambientales y agentes patógenos (virus, bacterias y hongos). Aconsejadas para uso en situaciones en contacto con el virus, personal médico, pacientes y entornos donde haya propagación de aerosoles. Se recomienda utilizar esta mascarilla en espacios cerrado, o con escasa ventilación y concurridos. Recomendados para centros sanitarios, residencias, farmacias, usuarios de lugares públicos…

It is recommended for everyone to use a face mask because this is how you prevent COVID-19 from spreading to other people. If you have it and you sneeze, and the virus could end up on an object that other people will touch afterwards. Surgical masks avoid the risk of spreading the virus to other people. As such, they are used in operating theatres, which is where they get their name from. These are for daily use. As such, please note that they become ineffective after 6 to 8 hours of use, they fill up with germs. It is harmful to use them after this time.

For hygiene reasons, face masks should be changed every 4 hours for surgical masks; for FFP2 masks, it is not recommendable to use the mask for over 4-6 hours.

It is recommendable to change the mask for a clean dry one (or a new one) when the current one is damp.

Once you change your mask, throw it in the bin to avoid spreading the virus and polluting the environment.

Surgical masks have a VAT rate of 4%, FFP2 masks have a VAT rate of 21%.
